The light source is a modified slide projector with a stabilized power supply, a special filtering of the light source, and a customized optical system. A set of 39 narrow-band interference filters is used to generate monochrome light. The slide transportation system of the projector is used to move the filters one after another in front of the lamp. Beside the interference filters are neutral density filters, which are used as a brightness reference to correct exposure variations. The exposure data is used to correct different exposure levels. So it is possible to perform the measurement even with a camera set to automatic exposure control as long as the exposure data is available through the EXIF meta data.
The evaluation software makes the measurement fast and convenient. It provides a batch conversion of common RAW files* by controlling 'dcraw' and performs a dark frame subtraction. To measure the spectral response the software reads the pixel values from the pictures of the interference filters and processes the data. Additional features are the generation of a 3x3 color correction matrix and the assessment of the measurement by comparing real camera and predicted RGB values. On request customized versions e.g. with extended IR capability are available. This is one of the advantages of camSPECS over camSPECS express.
